The Florida Highwaymen were a group of 26 African-Americans who broke convention to paint beautiful iconic landscapes on basic materials, such as Upson board and crown molding, in the segregated South during the mid-1950s and 1960s. Collectively, they produced more than 200,000 paintings over a 30-year period.
Rediscovered in the mid-1990s, today they are recognized as the work of American folk artists.
The Highwaymen, a loose association of 25 men and 1 woman from the Ft. Pierce area are a fascinating mixture of individual talent, collective enterprise, and cultural heritage.
The 7 living Highwaymen are committed to providing mentorship to young aspiring artists through our collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club, in order to pass on the gift of and passion for their unique and historical style of art.
"We must use the power of art, sport and music as agents of social change. They have an almost unmatched role to play in promoting understanding, healing wounds, mobilising support for social causes, and breaking down barriers”, Kofi Annan
Utilizing ART, SPORT and MUSIC as platforms and vehicles to promote cultural exchange and understanding, education and peace is a proven concept. This project will establish the City of Delray Beach and Cason United Methodist Church as the spearheads of a nation wide “Peace and Education Through Sport and The Arts” - Legacy of Goodwill.
